located within the indian city of kolkata, nexus design has completed the interior of a themed pub called‘refinery 091’. the project begins with the name, as ’91’ is the international dialling code for india and the concept is inspired by an oil refinery – a place that transforms, refines and draws new products from a raw material. with a focus on the materiality of the space, the scheme intends to provide a high-quality bar that brings drinks, food and entertainment to the ‘next level.’

as patrons enter into the space from a giant 8 meter-high door, they are greeted with the sight of an 8 meter-high bar display which illuminates the back wall and becomes one of the main features of the design by nexus. the program also comprises of a DJ counter to the left of the entrance and a dancefloor and small VIP area to the right. additional seating areas can be found on a mezzanine level that is reached via flanking staircases.

the variety of materials have been specified to create an interior that is both raw and refined. timber is used to form a warm, welcoming aesthetic, while the metal pipes which also adorn the space evoke the feeling of more industrial surroundings. appearing as copper, the pipes are in fact made from stainless steel but are PVD coated in copper and black finishes. the bar area is designed to emulate the process of an oil refinery, with its bubblers, and energy thus formed percolating through the drinks, food, music and flowing around the place in copper pipes.

the copper color seen throughout the interior undoubtedly characterises the design.without being overbearing, it accentuates the purity and rawness of the decor. another highlight is the chimney, which is laid out on the floor to signify the energy oozing out of the floor. the DJ counter has been theme styled as a brewery tank to inspire the disc jockeys to brew up their unique mixes to entertain patrons of the pub.
