Optimizing Lighting and Illumination Systems

Modeling lighting and illumination systems is a complex task that is facilitated with automated algorithms that systematically vary the model’s geometric parameters to achieve optimum illumination distributions. These algorithms allow users to quickly generate starting designs, test design alternatives, and validate the final design iteration and its performance criteria.
TracePro Optimization Utilityis a non-sequential optimization module that uses TracePro’s DDE interaface and Scheme macro language to transfer information back and forth between the utility and TracePro. The utility consists of several components to step you through the design process.

The optimizer features a toolbox with 4 main functions. A sketch utility to digitize in an idea using both line and spline segments to create the initial starting design. An interactive raytracer to verify the design. An object function to add more parts and modify parts in the design. Finally, a bitmap utility to use captured images as a start to any design. Further this utility features a drag and drop interface to move objects and modify control points and segments into place.
The optimizer also features a property editor to define optical properties and specify exact locations of each segment and control point. Control points can be specified exactly, as a variable, or a pickup to any other control point. Multiple targets with weights can be used during any optimization.

To define a merit function the user has complete control of 7 different operand types, flux, irradiance, intensity, CIE (x,y) CIE (u,v), Irradiance Profile and Candela profile. Each operand can used in combination with any other operand. Targets can be digitized in to specify angular intensity profiles, irradiance profiles and color targets.
All functions of the optimizer utility works with the TracePro Standard and Expert edtions. The LC edition functions are limited to the toolbox capabilities which include the digitized sketcher, interactive raytrace, bitmap importer and object toobox.
Utilities for TracePro

TracePro utilities assist in quickly and accurately creating and optimizing properties. Inputs include data from physical measurements, manufacturers' data and industry standards. The following utilities are available for
download to all current maintenance and support subscribers.
Surface Source Property Utility
The Surface Source Property Utility helps users set up the TracePro surface source property - quickly and accurately. The tool reads the spectrum and angular radiation pattern directly from the manufacturer's data sheet. While useful for LEDs, this tool can also be used to generate a surface source property for any type of light source.

The utility is for use with all TracePro editions and requires the most recent release of TracePro 5.0 or 6.0.
Surface Source Property Utility Technical Note Fluorescence Property Utility for White LED Design
The Fluorescence Property Utility helps users optimize down converting phosphor formulations and excitation LEDs selection in white LED design. It also facilitate the creation of the fluorescence material property in the TracePro model. The macro tool reads both the excitation, absorption and emission luminescence spectra of the material and the relative spectral power distribution of the excitation LED from the manufacturers' data. While useful for white LED design, this tool can also be used to generate a fluorescence property for any type of energy converting material.

The utility requires the most recent release of TracePro Expert 5.0 or 6.0.
Fluorescence Property Utility Technical Note IES Import Utility
TracePro's IES Import Utility helps users import photometric data in ANSI/IESNA standard electronic file formats to TracePro Surface Source and File Source Properties. The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) publishes "IESNA Standard File Format for the Electronic Transfer of Photometric Data and Related Information." The most recent publication, LM-63-02, was ANSI approved September 12, 2002 and is available at
www.techstreet.com . The TracePro IES Import Utility adheres to this most recently published standard.

The utility is for use with all TracePro editions and requires the most recent release of TracePro 5.0 or 6.0.
IES Utility Technical Note Textured RepTile Optimization Utility
The Textured RepTile Optimization Utility helps users optimize structured Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) backlight components including Brightness Enhancement Films (BEFs), Turning Films, and extraction features in light guides. With a TracePro model of the LCD, the utility generates and optimizes a Textured RepTile property for uniformity or flux. While useful for optimizing structured backlight components, this tool can also be used to optimize any Textured RepTile in TracePro.

The utility requires the most recent release of TracePro Expert 5.0 or 6.0.
